Excellent Preparation
for University Life
After completing the Middle Years Programme (MYP), students begin the final two years of the Diploma Programme (DP) of the International Baccalaureate® (IB), continuing with the methodology with which they became familiar in the Secondary School. These two years conclude the process of their education at Alegra.
The DP Programme is an excellent preparation for University and adulthood for Alegra pupils, and it is also locally and globally recognized by universities for the holistic and rigorous education it provides.
The DP Curriculum
The DP curriculum is made up of six subject groups and three core elements.
The subject groups are:
- Studies in language and literature
- Language acquisition
- Individuals and societies
- Sciences
- Mathematics
- The arts
The three core elements aim to broaden students’ educational experience and challenge them to apply their knowledge and skills.
- Theory of knowledge, in which students reflect on the nature of knowledge and on how we know what we claim to know.
- The extended essay, which is an independent, self-directed piece of research, finishing with a 4,000-word paper.
- Creativity, activity and service, in which students complete a project related to those three concepts.
How does assessment work in the DP Programme?
When students finish the programme, they carry out written examinations which are corrected by the IB’s external examiners. They also carry out assessment tasks in School which are evaluated by their teachers and later revised by external moderators or sent directly to the external examiners.
External
Examinations form the basis of the assessment for most courses. This is because of their high levels of objectivity and reliability:
- Essays
- Structured problems
- Short-response questions
- Data-response questions
- Text-response questions
- Case-study questions
- Multiple-choice questions
Internal
In both years, internal evaluation by Alegra teachers is also used and includes:
- Oral language work
- Fieldwork in Geography
- Laboratory work in Sciences
- Research work in Mathematics
- Artistic performances
The Diploma Programme, is the longest and highest achiever of the IB Programmes to date, it is imparted in 3.421 schools and in 157 countries around the world. (sept. 2019)
How to score in IB Diploma Program?
In the DP, students receive grades ranging from 7 to 1, with 7 being highest. Students receive a grade for each DP course attempted.
A student’s final Diploma result score is made up of the combined scores for each subject. The diploma is awarded to students who gain at least 24 points, subject to certain minimum levels of performance including successful completion of the three essential elements of the DP core.
The theory of knowledge (TOK) and extended essay (EE) components are awarded individual grades and, collectively, can contribute up to 3 additional points towards the overall Diploma score.
Creativity, Action, Service – the remaining element in the DP core – does not contribute to the points total but authenticated participation is a requirement for the award of the diploma.
